The Byron Bay Artist Built Her Pop-R&B Single in a Studio She Made Herself

On All Night, Cat Thompson sounds like someone who paid attention when she opened a concert for Lloyd. He is the singer who carried 2000s R&B onto pop radio. The Byron Bay artist wrote, produced and engineered the single herself. As a result, smooth vocals and modern pop hooks sit on a groove descended from that decade.

Cat Thompson’s music is in the playlist below, and All Night sits among the tracks, with every feature so far gathered on the Cat Thompson artist profile. The single reached this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news sites. Listen first, then keep reading for the lineage behind it.

The 2000s R&B Wave That All Night Is Built On

The wave behind All Night is easy to date. Through the 2000s, R&B ran on mid-tempo grooves and stacked harmonies. Its hooks sat as comfortably on pop radio as in the club. Lloyd made the case with Southside in 2004 and Get It Shawty in 2007: smooth vocals over bright, uncluttered production.

A decade later, a new generation started borrowing from that era on purpose. For example, Kehlani titled her 2017 album SweetSexySavage after TLC’s CrazySexyCool, and the nod was the point.

What changed in the revival is who holds the controls. Back then, teams of producers usually built the sound in big studios. Today, however, one person often makes the record in a room they set up themselves. That is exactly where Cat Thompson’s single comes from.

Where Cat Thompson and All Night Fit, From a Brisbane Childhood to a Byron Bay Farm Studio

Cat Thompson’s story starts in Brisbane, with a Northern Irish father and a Filipino mother, and she grew up in Japan. As a child she played piano and wrote poetry, and songwriting grew out of the two. Since then she has performed in the Solomon Islands, Vietnam, the Philippines and Australia. Along the way, she opened concerts for the rapper Eve, the R&B singer Lloyd and the dance crew The Jabbawockeez.

Her songwriting has travelled further still. She wrote for Lani Misalucha’s album Force Called Woman, which Universal Production Music released. In addition, radio stations in more than thirty countries have played her work. Her previous single, Dance Fire, won Best R&B Performance at the UK’s Indie Music Icons Radio Awards 2026.

All Night goes back to basics. Cat Thompson wrote, produced and engineered it in the studio she built on a farm in Byron Bay. The single runs two minutes and 57 seconds. Its subject is the pull of a new connection, the restless, smiling search for love that keeps someone up until morning. Meanwhile, the arrangement keeps that mood light. A 2000s R&B groove sits underneath, with smooth vocals in the middle and modern pop hooks on top.

She is clear about why the studio matters. “Building my own studio from scratch allowed me to take full control of the writing, production, and engineering for ‘All Night’ as an independent artist,” she said.

The official music video followed in early October and runs three minutes and eight seconds. In it, she searches for someone special through fields of flowers and gardens in rural New South Wales.

BlackSounds.News’s curator team: “All Night proves the 2000s R&B pocket survives the move from a big studio to a farm in Byron Bay. The groove stays relaxed, and the hook arrives exactly where radio wants it.”

Adjacent Acts for Fans of Cat Thompson and All Night, From Kehlani and JoJo to Mahalia

Three singers make the best map for All Night. Kehlani is the obvious first stop. She has spent a decade proving that a 2000s groove can carry very modern writing. JoJo is the second, and the most literal link to the era. In fact, her 2004 debut, Leave (Get Out), was a teenage R&B and pop hit of exactly the kind All Night recalls.

Mahalia completes the set. The Leicester singer’s 2019 album Love and Compromise showed how warm, conversational R&B could travel out of the UK. That is also where Cat Thompson’s award came from. Together, the three cover the American and British sides of the revival, and All Night sits comfortably between both.

So who is it for? Listeners in Australia, the UK and the US who grew up on 2000s R&B will find it an easy record to add. Fans of contemporary Pop-R&B will too. Stream it on Spotify or Apple Music.
