A Self-Made Emo Rap Single Built on the Structure of an Old English Nursery Rhyme

Deadrice built FALLING (PERSIST) on the shape of a nursery rhyme. The single came out on 7 August 2026. It began with the structure of London Bridge Is Falling Down and grew into an emo rap song about pushing through doubt.

Deadrice and FALLING (PERSIST) Descend From SoundCloud Emo Rap and YouTube Lofi Beats

Lofi hip-hop grew out of the underground beatmaking scene of the 2000s. The Roland SP-303 and SP-404 samplers each gave producers a dedicated lo-fi effect. Meanwhile, MF DOOM and Madlib’s Madvillainy became a reference point for the sound. Later, the Japanese producer Nujabes carried it further with music for the anime Samurai Champloo. Today, the style is often traced back to that work. Then, in the 2010s, round-the-clock YouTube streams carried those beats to a far wider audience.

Emo rap came up online in the same years, through SoundCloud. Juice WRLD first released Lucid Dreams there on 15 June 2017. Eleven months later, it became an official single and climbed to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The song rests on an interpolation of Sting’s 1993 Shape of My Heart. As a result, Sting ended up owning 85 per cent of its rights.

FALLING (PERSIST) sits where those two lines meet. It is an electronic hip-hop track on an atmospheric beat, made for listeners of emo rap and lofi beats. Its subject is the moment of pushing forward when every doubt says stop.

BlackSounds.News Curator Team: “We placed FALLING (PERSIST) in our playlist because it carries a playground rhythm several centuries old into a modern emo rap hook. Most listeners will feel that lineage before they can name it.”

Where Deadrice Fits, as a One-Person Session Behind FALLING (PERSIST) and a Busy 2026

The credits read like a bedroom session. Spotify lists Deadrice as beatmaker, producer, executive producer, mixing and mastering engineer and vocalist. The words and the music carry the name Rhys Froetschner. On Instagram, Deadrice claims the same set of roles, from lyricist and composer to mix and master engineer.

The song turns on one hook: It feels like, I’m falling to, the ground, the doubts I have are all I know. Those words sit on the old frame of London Bridge Is Falling Down, a traditional English nursery rhyme and playground game. Printers first set it close to its modern form in the mid-18th century. It then spread through Britain and the United States in the 19th century, and the melody most people know first appeared on record late in that century. In the rhyme, a bridge will not stay standing. In the hook, a person keeps falling and refuses to stay down, which is the persist in the title.

Underneath sits a beat that Deadrice made. The mood is bittersweet: sad about the doubt, stubborn about the answer to it. The single runs for four minutes and 23 seconds.

FALLING (PERSIST) also arrived in the middle of a crowded year. Deadrice opened 2026 with the ten-track Late Night Thoughts on 1 January. July brought two collaborations, Simple with WHYNOT and All You Said with 1i1 Wi11. After those came thru my head (16), two Glimpse EPs and the album V.O.I.D on 31 July. After the single, Not a Businessman followed on 23 October.

The Acts Around Deadrice, From Eminem and Juice WRLD to Nujabes

Hip-hop has long carried children’s songs into adult stories. Eminem built the chorus of Mockingbird on the traditional lullaby Hush, Little Baby. In doing so, he turned a song for settling a child into a song for his two daughters. The track came out on Encore in 2004 and became a single the following spring.

Deadrice does something similar with a playground rhyme. Juice WRLD sits close by in another way. Lucid Dreams also leaned on an older melody. Its writer called it a kind of therapy session, private pain turned into a hook.

Nujabes is the quieter neighbour: the lofi side of the family tree that the beat under FALLING (PERSIST) descends from.

For listeners who came to hip-hop through melodic emo rap or through late-night lofi streams, start with FALLING (PERSIST). Then go back to the six-track I LIVE IN NIGHTMARES, released in July 2024, to hear where the sound began.
