Amapiano was built in the townships on the edges of Gauteng’s cities, where most of its first artists came from. Its lineage is easy to follow once you know where to listen. The keys and melodies descend from jazz and gospel. Meanwhile, the drums and tempo come from house and from diBacardi, the style that spread out of greater Pretoria. Kwaito, in turn, lends the sound its basslines and harmonies.

Put those parts together and you get a rolling, patient groove, and that groove has travelled. It moved from township parties to national charts, then out through DJs in cities with large southern African communities. In the UK, that means booths where amapiano sits next to SA house and gqom, the harder Durban style, in the same set.

In 2020 she became the first Zimbabwean artist to win the BET Award for Best New International Act. Her route shows how long the genre has made room for artists from beyond South Africa’s borders. 263GSD carries a version of that line into UK booths.

The second reference is Kabza De Small himself. Born in eMalahleni and later based in Pretoria, he formed Scorpion Kings with DJ Maphorisa. Their 2019 releases remain touchstones for the style. Producers who arrive later, wherever they are based, are building on that foundation.
